Pakistan's month-on-month mobile phone imports increased by 43.56 percent in April 2022 to $213.895 million compared to $183.894 million imported in March 2022, PBS data showed.

On a month-on-month basis, the country's total imports of telecommunication services increased by 3.35 percent in April 2022 to $276.664 million, compared to imports of $267.705 million in March 2022.

July-April 2021-22
On a year-over-year basis, total telecommunications imports increased by 43.25 percent from $193.137 million in April 2021. Imports of other equipment during July-April 2021-22 increased by 39.87 percent to $603.548 million, compared to $431.514 million in July. - April 21, 2020.

According to the rating agency, this trend is due to the phased production program and the government-launched production incentive scheme.

FY2022 and 2024
Crisil projects that the pace of production growth will continue at an annual growth rate of 22-26 percent between FY2022 and 2024 to Rs 4-4.5 lakh in value terms.



 The increase will be driven by the PLI scheme, which is in its second year for most players.

 China alone meets 79 percent of U.S
 The US is the largest importer of mobile phones, accounting for 20 percent of global shipments, followed by Hong Kong at 15 percent and Japan at 6 percent. China alone meets 79 percent of U.S. demand, while Vietnam supplies 16 percent.

The last financial year was significant as India's mobile exports grew by 56 percent year on year, supported by two schemes. Exports are expected to grow further to Rs 1-1.2 lakh crore in FY2023 and FY24, according to the report.

However, Indian exports mostly consist of low-end phones priced below Rs 10,000.



Samsung and Apple
Major markets like the US, Hong Kong, and Japan import phones priced above Rs 15,000. However, the agency expects exports to gain a leg up in the medium term due to foreign majors such as Samsung and Apple and domestic players ramping up their production and assembly in the country.

During 2017-2022, smartphone sales in the country grew from 113 million to 159-161 million. On the other hand, feature phone shipments declined to 88-90 million from 140 million during the period.

 The decline can be attributed to a three-fold increase in the number of 4G subscribers.
