Nonprofits Want To Bring Attention To Sports Injury Prevention

It is considered a “silent epidemic” and threatens the youth of our nation.

We are talking about sports-related injuries. Every day nearly 8,000 young athletes are injured enough to be sent to the emergency room, and, if that is not annoying enough, check out the figures from the National Athletic Trainers ’Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• Last year alone, 48 young people died from sports injuries.
• About 30,000 high school athletes are hospitalized each year.
• Conflicts cause 90 percent of head injuries to 300,000 high school students per year.

That explains why the new program called "Athletic TIPS" Towards Injury Prevention in Sports has garnered the support of everyone from health care providers to sports directors to sports stars, such as football legend Michael Strahan.

The retired defense of the New York Giants, in fact, tells of a video presentation in the name of the nonprofit group that created the cause.

The aim of the program is to promote a “safe experience” for kindergarten athletes through college levels by focusing on the recognition, prevention, and management of sports-related injuries all through community workshops, online learning, and other grassroots programs.

"Athletic TIPS responds to the vital need to educate school athletes, their parents, and counselors about sports-related injuries," said Ed Goren, former vice-chairman of Fox Sports Media Group.

"I hope that parents will feel more confident about encouraging their sons and daughters to get great sports and life lessons."

Workshops focus on four key areas: conflict awareness and prevention; nutrition in sports management; preventing dehydration and heat-related conditions; and prevention and care of musculoskeletal injuries.
