Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac on quitting, streaming, and the future of the music industry.
It was uh there are a number of things, in fact, um awareness of growing up in a small radio station um realizing that my type of work is very different and I am starting new things I have always wanted to do so I started writing and started doing podcasting doing these other ways.
I have been wanting to check that I do not have time let's just look at the last few years you are well placed to know what young people especially their experience of the past two years we had an epidemic and yes they felt in need. Can you tell me that I mean to go to work at night as it is clear that we are a DJ and that was something that disappeared and fell into the abyss so for everyone in the industry, it was totally abusive and for people over 20 years of schooling
Doing things like losing proms misses rates by all these great moments other things. who misses those good times when you will be able to jump around in the field with your friends or in a nightclub and get lost in the music and I feel like you are looking down on something you know there are more important things but the thought of connecting and feeling is part of something and feeling is part of something bigger than you.
if you're in such a crowd I think it's very important but not much to change now I mean I think last year as you've been a DJ on the radio like two-thirds of nightclubs were shot there are a lot of reasons why gentrification nightclubs have things like how people use social media.
People want to be at parties they want to be able to take selfies in front of signs and they want during the day and they want to know that they want to shine too, I want clothes and nightclubs traditionally dark for sweat spaces where it will not be seen and I think there is a new generation of children where your life remains at the peak of visibility because of social media.
It's interesting what you say openly about social media it's clear that that has changed things a lot because you know a lot of kids don't look spoiled now in terms of grams, it’s about the good looks of the world it’s about being an island of love the hen is like building a complete border.
Makeup is wrong and a lot of that spirit is gone and that kind of spirit that was around the kind of hedonism of, punk and things like that that never thought would happen again hello my name is Annie mack tell me even though you are a keeper but you think.
The role of keepers is that we are losing the role of creator now because of the example Spotify and so on no I don't think it's exciting that you know that streaming is coming again I think it's made to be nailed home with a hammer personal selection and connection.
When it comes to the discovery of music and music if you have a wide variety of music in your hands at any time when the old and new concept is obsolete because you also have one catalog behind every single discography on your phone.
So baby, you probably find out that you know Taylor swift next to the next one you know that there are no more boundaries between old and new so I think more than ever you need someone to help you join the dots between records there is no way to broadcast what to do music radio now makes hello and talk about wanting to hear your own life was free yes you think it was very stressful at times you really know anyone who is a working mother who runs a lot of things,I have done it would not be so good to say no for a while, I took a lot I wanted to stand out so much I wanted to do everything and I also wanted to prove that I could do everything as a woman and then came the point with my second child.
Where I was actually I don't really want to do everything and yes and consider saying even loudly a curse to other people you can't have it either all you do not know and I think you know that that is powerful and when I am announced that I was leaving thinking you know that a great article has made I time interviews and actually the article was quoting me for something I didn't say when I said 42 I left the kids which are not just you know there are so many other things I want to do a job- smart someone described it as an idea of what kind of sofa they deserve me to get a new idea and where the sofa is going next I don't know maybe under the window.
I mean you've paid for thousands upon thousands of tracks, yes and you know that people have songs of the most common things in their lives it wouldn't be but if you didn't say something still sounded to you something has sent you something that has changed you have a hat kind of talisman of a song.
There is a song by techno producer called DJ Rolando and is called Knights of the jaguar and it is a song and just passing is one thing I have done I said as a 43-year-old woman I am just telling you that life goes on very fast life is short it shouts and if you like the music you have to get up and dance and just do what I have been trying to find.
Your exit how you cover 17 years of radio like how you can get caught without seeing how long it is impossible for someone else to take it and make it look like you are visible because you change the way people feel and that is important and I think what music you do changes the way you feel and makes you feel you're fine hey mack.
